We in the West tend to think of anything Gypsy as European, but of course, the nomadic Roma tribe scattered itself throughout Europe, the Middle East and even over into India, where its characteristic dancing styles include the Chakri, made up of Sufi-influenced swirling circular movements meant to imitate a colorful, spinning top, and the sensuous dance style known as Saprea, which includes the snake charmers dance; both will be performed by Kalapriya Dance. Flamenco dancing dominates in Spain at the other end of the Silk Road, and will be showcased by Flamenco Triana, but the real treat of this free lunchtime performance will be the grand finale which will have Kalapriya Dance and Flamenco Triana combine to fuse these two dancing styles, shortening the distance of thousands of miles with a few memorable steps.
