Making their official American performance debut to coincide with the Gay Games, the Mexican dance troupe La Cebra Gay Dance Company was founded by San Luis Potosi native and dancer, choreographer and teacher José Rivera Moya a decade ago with the explicit mission to present gay life and culture onstage to the most diverse and broadest audiences possible, particularly those unaware of gay culture. Drawing upon a wide repertoire of nearly thirty pieces, including groundbreaking works that Moya did for other Mexican ballet companies before founding La Cebra, the troupe will perform six of its most popular dance pieces—some seen in Lyon, France where the troupe represented Mexico at the prestigious 10th Dance Biennial four years ago—including “Dance of the Mistaken Love,” “The Soldier and the Sailor,” “The Family,” “Time Wastes All… Only Death Remains….,” “Nationalist” and “Before Dawn, when she’s dragging down.” (Dennis Polkow)
