Choreographer Daniel Shapiro, co-founder of Shapiro & Smith Dance, passed away on October 3 from prostate cancer at the age of 48 and was on his way to making his Chicago debut with his work “Dance with Two Army Blankets” with the Thodos Dance Chicago. The company has decided to move forward and present the work as a memorial tribute to Shapiro as part of its fifteenth-anniversary season with the help of his wife, choreographer Joanie Smith. Premiered at New York’s Dance Theater Workshop in 1992, the quirky “Dance With Two Army Blankets” features five dancers hurling themselves through space while their companions catch them in large Army blankets, all set to a score by Toby Twinings.
