There is a powerful revival happening at the Viaduct. It comes by way of Provision Theater Company’s production of “Smoke on the Mountain.” This small chamber musical conceived by Alan Bailey, written by Connie Ray and, in this instance, directed by Provision’s artistic leader Tim Gregory, has become a favorite among theaters looking for family-friendly fare, especially with those that place particular emphasis on the spiritual. You could not assemble a better cast for this little show with big demands. The piece happens over an evening at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church as Pastor Oglethorpe struggles to bring his congregation into the “modern world” with their first-ever Saturday Night Sing. The Sanders Family Singers are the musical guests for the evening. All six of them sing and give testimony, and most of them play more than one instrument. They are a dynamic family played by dynamic performers. If you are a fan of traditional gospel music or just a good time, might I suggest “Smoke on the Mountain.” (William Scott)
