One of the most exciting things about Chicago dance is that we have a professional company in almost any style you are looking for. For forty-six seasons now, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago (GJDC) has been waving the flag for jazz, an American form that so often gets overlooked. GJDC is shaking things up a bit and bringing us something new when they take Harris Theater for their annual spring engagement. Opening both acts of the program will be world-premiere work. Ira Antelis’ song “Brand New Day” is first. Performed by a chorus of more than thirty children, the musical work has inspired the GJDC dancers to collaborate on the creation of this dance. In the second half see “Give & Take” by Brock Clawson. In 2006 Dance Chicago named him Choreographer of the Year and this will be his first time setting work on a jazz company. He is lucky to have dancers like those in GJDC to stretch out his proverbial jazz hands. (William Scott)
