Here’s the press release from Hubris Theatre:
Season 5: LESSONS OF LUST AND GREED
CHICAGO, IL–Hubris Productions is proud to announce its 2011 season: Agnes of God by John Pielmeier, The Underpants by Steve Martin and the Chicago premier of All Childish Things by Joe Zettelmaier.
In the season opener, Agnes of God, a young nun is accused of murdering her newborn and a psychiatrist is appointed to assess her sanity. In her lust for faith, the Mother Superior tries to keep Agnes from the doctor. Who killed the infant? Who was the father? All three women are forced to review the meaning of faith and the power of love. This play was a hit on Broadway and also in film. Agnes of God opens March 12.
Greed as well as lust plays a role in The Underpants, which opens June 25. When Louise’s bloomers fall down in public, her husband fears the incident will cost him his job with the staid German government of 1910. He keeps the job but gets his come-uppance when two men, infatuated with Louise, both arrange to rent the spare room in the couple’s home. This farce, adapted by Steve Martin, is filled with bold humor and hilarious sexual innuendo.
All Childish Things, a Chicago premiere, is a tale of a heist gone wrong. Dave has come up with the plan, Carter’s got a way in, Max has figured a way out and Kendra has the connections. All is ready for these four Star Wars fans to swipe a cashload of fandom merchandise, but instead Dave’s fanatic lust to pull this off threatens his colleagues lives, reveals their deep secrets and threatens to tear these good friends apart forever. This play was nominated in 2006 for the prestigious American Theater Critics Award for best new play.
All these tales touch our sense of the power of lust in various ways. The seven deadly sins will continue to be the theme of future seasons. Exploring diversity and presenting differing perspectives are objectives of Hubris Productions, which was formed by friends from around the country who have chosen Chicago as their artistic home. Now in its fifth year, the company strives to spark and sustain a passion for the performing arts in Chicago, developing a strong rapport between the ensemble and patrons. Hubris Productions provides entertainment, education and inspiration and invests in the community.
During 2011, we will work with Humboldt Park Social Services/Changing Lives, to raise money and receive household goods to support their services to abused and homeless women. Learn more about Hubris Productions at www.hubrisproductions.com
