The coalition of experimental artists lead by dancer Ayako Kato presents two weekends of performances that explore the creative possibility of the moment. “Octet” brings together major players from the Chicago free jazz scene—including Jim Baker, Jason Adasiewicz, Keefe Jackson, Mike Reed and AUH co-founder and Kato’s husband, Jason Roebke—to improvise with a small ensemble of dancers. “Incidents II” is a trio informed by “the ripple effect and trajectories of figure eight” that incorporates elements of installation in the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse. Kato will also perform the Chicago premiere of her fifty-one minute solo “Dear BACH—Goldberg Variations.” Kato’s finely honed energetic perceptiveness and receptiveness makes her a hypnotic presence—be she on a stage or, as in the case of last month’s durational performance with Zephyr Dance, behind a showcase window. Throughout the two weekends she will perform with a rotating cast of dance artists and improvisers, so it’s doubtful one could see the same show twice. (Sharon Hoyer)
