Kyiv City Ballet was visiting Paris when Russia invaded Ukraine, turning what was to be a two-week engagement of the “Nutcracker” into an indefinite stay in France, with company members now both refugees and cultural ambassadors. Kyiv City Ballet will tour the United States for the first time this fall, bringing a mixed repertory program of classical and contemporary ballet and Ukrainian folk dance to the Auditorium Theatre.

The extraordinary Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan brings a new evening-length work to the United States, inspired by stories artistic director Cheng Tsung-lung’s mother told him of a street artist who embodied all walks of life in 1960s Taipei. A visually striking set and the company’s inimitable technique—informed by contemporary dance, martial arts and meditation—combine to create an immersive, dreamlike fantasy of Taoist ritual and Bangka street life.

A first-time collaboration between the Pina Bausch Foundation in Germany and Ecole des Sables in Senegal comes to the Harris stage. Part one of the program is Bausch’s iconic, heart-stopping 1975 “The Rite of Spring,” set to Stravinsky’s score and performed by a company of dancers from across Africa. Part two is a duet between Germaine Acogny, founder of Ecole des Sables, and Malou Airaudo, former member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
